Oh, my, now that's a name! Perhaps Precious's parents were going for the lesson-learned-via-forced-toughness as in that old Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue."
Glad you found the links helpful, Mary!

I worked in a doctor's office and was astonished when Precious Butler was a 40 y/o black male who weighed about 300 pounds.

Thanks for the name links as this is something I'm working on for myself.

This is a hard thing to do in writing, but you are so right about really needing a character.

I'm working on a manuscript now that has a number of minor characters. They each appear in their own scenes as the hero travels home from a Yankee prison camp in 1865. He meets them on the journey, and I manage to tie them together so that what happens in one scene affects what happens on down the road. Not sure if that's clear, but it's been fun finding ways to connect the characters along the way.

I love your books, Mary, as well as all of the characters you created. Looking forward to more.

It was an encouraging experience when you turned down my first novel. That was going on 2 years ago now, and I can see how far I've come since.

I'd also like to say thanks to your assistant at the time. She did the actual read-through, and sent me a personal email that was very much a blessing.

Thanks again.

Absolutely! I would go even further, our very desire to write is a gift from Him, for His purpose and great pleasure. Thank you for your beautiful post - I love reading words from a heart of gratitude.

Thank you for the beautiful words of wisdom. It is really easy sometimes to get tied up in all of the things we have heard, or others have experienced in their writing journey. Great Reminder to stay focused on the purpose of our writing and the one who directs our journey!
