Colorado Chapter meeting

Date: Monday, January 4, 2010
Time: 7:00pm – 9:00pm
Location: Barnes & Noble – Park Meadows
Street: 8374 S. Willow Street
City/Town: Lone Tree, CO

Speaker: Chris Richards

Topic: Writing God’s Words
God has called all people to join him in creation. Our special part of creation is the world of writing. Some of that writing is fiction or non-fiction to share with others. Some is the writing of words to lift our souls closer to Him. This writing can be strictly for ourselves or it can be to share with others. This program will begin with my journey of writing the things God has shown me in His Word and how that journey has grown. This will be followed by a time to share the words God has given each of you along with discussion of how these words can be used to benefit others. Please bring something you have written to share.

DFW Ready Writers is excited to present a two-hour session for Saturday January 9th with Mr. Bryan Clark.

Mr. Clark, born in Taylor County, Texas, a US Marine at the age of seventeen, serve our country during World War II. He holds the honorable distinction of being a WWII veteran who also fought at the battle of Iwo Jima and later became a Texas Ranger.

Whether you write historicals or not, or if you are just a history buff, you won’t want to miss hearing Mr. Clark. As a writer, minor characters in your books, such as a grandpa or an eccentric elderly uncle with a WWII background, add depth to your writing by adding a touch of truth from the past. And what better way to learn about history than from one who has been there and can give you a first-hand account.

Mr. Clark is a fascinating man with an amazing history. He will be speaking about WWII and what it was like to be at a place in history that will live on in infamy. Three of his close buddies were among the six men, five marines and one navy corpsman raising the flag on that notable day as Mr. Clark made his way up the hill at Imo Jima. Before his battalion landed, they were told the battle would take 72-96 hours. Instead, the battle raged on for a total of 37 days with 6,825 American casualties and approximately 22,000 Japanese casualties.

After the war when Mr. Clark came home to Texas, he attended Texas Tech where he received his degree in Business Administration. He played professional baseball for the Lubbock Hubbers, and from 1969 to 1987 he served as a Texas Ranger.

This man has lived a varied and exciting life, and he will be sharing his experiences of WWII and his life as a Texas Ranger.

You will not want to miss the DFW Ready Writers’ meeting on Saturday, January 9th.

We are opening up this meeting to writers and non-writers due to the nature of the topic. Since this will be a longer session than normal, we are charging a nominal fee of $15.00 per person for the two-hour session.

Hope you will be able to attend.

Central Ohio Fiction Writers Workshop

Register Now for Central Ohio Fiction Writers Workshop

Laurie Schnebly Campbell’s Workshop:
The Personality Ladder and Plotting Via Motivation
January 23, 2010
Time: 9-5
Holiday Inn, 7007 High Street, Columbus, OH

The session begins with tools that will determine each character’s personality — ideally in ways that bring them into conflict not only with other characters, but also with themselves.

Next we track the hero through the seven steps he needs to move through, covering the journey from Stasis through Triumph. Of course, every character has their own ladder to climb in parallel stages until they reach the final resolution together. (There’s even a ladder for the villain, although he rarely makes it to the top!)

Armed with a solid grasp of the characters’ personalities, we turn to plotting…which begins with motivation. External events might make a difference to the story, but they’re only one element of the plot. Because once we nail down any character’s motivation, it doesn’t matter what takes place in their world…they’ll create a plot from WHATEVER happens. There’s no need to prepare a story idea, character bios, goal
charts or anything else, because you’ll learn how to plot an entire book — and actually have it ready to type — by the end of this hands-on workshop.

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN @ WWW.COFW.ORG

Cost: COFW members $40 Non-members $45 (fee for using paypal) Includes lunch

Hotel: $89 rate: 614-436-0700 or 1-888-HOLIDAY. Mention the Central Ohio Fiction Writers Workshop room rate.

We will be raffling a free registration for one of Laurie’s 2011
on-line workshops, an “I’ll Write Your Synopsis” certificate from Laurie, book basket.

Merry Christmas from ACFW!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

We at ACFW celebrate Christ Jesus coming to earth by remembering the words of the angel who came to the shepherds that night, telling them not to be afraid, but to rejoice, because the angel came with news of great joy for everyone.  A Savior had been born to them,

Christ the Lord.

wise men w stars

And with that pronouncement, the sky filled with a huge company of angels all singing,

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to all men on whom His favor rests.”

We wish all of you peace, joy, and prosperity this Christmas season and in the year ahead.

You can read the account of Jesus’ birth in Luke Chapter 2.
