A secret mission gone bad leaves Corp of Engineers demolitions expert Danielle Roark captured, beaten, and raped. After she finally escapes and is rescued, Danielle, also a U.S. senator’s daughter, must defend herself against charges of espionage. The only way to prove her innocence is to return to the place where things went horribly awry.
Former Green Beret Canyon “Midas” Metcalfe knows a thing or two about unsuccessful missions. Now a member of Nightshade, a band of militarily trained experts operating on the fringe of the government, Metcalfe’s career was destroyed by his own mission gone bad. Upon meeting Danielle, he’s determined to stand with her and face whatever dangers she must encounter in order to prove her innocence.
Ronie Kendig pens heart-stopping romantic thrillers. In this third installment of the Discarded Heroes series, both Dani and Midas are tortured by their memories. Even though the failure of their respective missions was not their fault, the consequences are theirs. Disgraced, both wish simply to be left alone. Thankfully for readers, Kendig doesn’t allow that to happen. Her twisting, turning storyline unites them and forces them to work together in order to find the redemption they both desperately seek.
Some writers write suspense well; others master romance. Kendig writes both storylines so well that she forces readers to war within themselves as to which portion of the story they most want to keep unfolding, and when done, which part they enjoyed most. The tense, poignant action begins on the first page and doesn’t let up until the very end. Her extensive knowledge of the military and Special Ops teams, a hallmark of the series, enables her to use the jargon and attitudes of her characters to convey a heightened sense of thrilling realism. Then, the romance between Dani and Midas is as painful and fraught with suspense as their mission to find redemption. Finally, the inclusion of the Metcalfe family dynamics adds another layer of satisfaction to the story. Readers will thirst for future installments.
