How Far We’ve Grown: Gail Martin

ACFWConference, memories Leave a Comment

In 2000, six Christian romance authors joined in a chat room to talk about the need for an organization for Christian romance writers. Though we were all members of Romance Writers of American (RWA), an organization we appreciated for what it did for romantic fiction, we realized that most workshops and some of the events were not as helpful for Christian romance writers. That realization brought about the American Christian Romance Writers (ACRW), but only a year passed before we heard from many authors who wrote outside the romance genre and wanted to join the organization. This motivated a major decision to legally change ACRW to ACFW, American Christain Fiction Writers. Today ACFW is the finest organization for Christian fiction writers in the U.S.

And that’s not even the beginning. Our dreams grew and in a short time, ACFW introduced the premier Christian Fiction conference in the country. As a co-founder, I’ve been awed by God’s blessings to our organization. Our conference has the backing of the finest publishers, editors and agents in Christian fiction, who offer individual appointments with authors as well  provide other opportunities to answer questions and advice to authors during meals and at late night workshops.

This year’s conference offers an early bird session with best-selling author, James Scott Bell. The keynote speaker for the event is Tim Downs, Christy Award winner, one of the most prestigious honors in Christian fiction. A multitude of workshops are presented throughout the day and evening. Conferees can enjoy opportunities for praise and worship each day, schedule appointments with editors and agents, participate in late night chats, an award banquet and so much more.

I have had the privilege of teaching fiction writing at most of the well-known Christian conferences in the country where I enjoyed fellowship with fellow published authors and new writers, but ACFW is the only conference that focuses on Christian fiction. If you desire a career in writing Christian fiction, this is the organization and the conference for you.
