Twas Two Weeks Before Christmas

Twas two weeks before Christmas
When all through the house
Not a creature was writing
Not even a mouse

With stockings all hung
And gifts wrapped with care
She hoped a writing idea
Soon would be there

The doggies were nestled
All safe on the bed
While visions of pup-peronis
Danced in their heads

And I in my sweatpants
And a tasty snack – light
Had just settled down
For an epic Netflix night

When out on the lawn
There arose such a clatter
The dogs sprang from the bed
To see what was the matter

Away to the window
We all flew like a flash
Tore open the shutter
And threw up the sash

The full moon shown bright
It made everything glow
It gave a luster of midday
To objects below

When what to my curious eyes
Should appear
But two raccoons, an opossum,
And a sweet little deer

They were fuzzy and cute
So lively and quick
They ate all the suet
In a number of licks

More rapid than eagles
The wildlife all came
As the dogs barked and howled
I called them by name

Now Tucker
Now Bella
Now Chloe and Winston
Now quiet
Don’t scare them
They’re all fellow creatures

To the top of the tree
And over the wall
They dashed away
Dashed away
Dashed away all

As remnants of dry leaves
From Fall did fly
They met with small feet
As they all scurried by

And then in a twinkle
I heard the pups stop
Their incessant barking
And pawing, and there they did flop

Their noses were shiny
Their eyes all aglow
Their demeanor was merry
Puppy love it did flow

A wink of their eye
And a twist of their head
Soon gave me to know
They were just playing dead

Then softly laying a hand
Upon each wet nose
And giving a nod
Up onto the bed
They arose

But I heard myself exclaim
As sleep I did fight
Tomorrow I’ll write
But for now, to all a goodnight

Merry Christmas!
